From Oil Change to Financial Trap: How an 81-Year-Old Widow Was Pressured Into a Car She Didn’t Want

Ms. Hazel is 81 years old. She’s a widow, living on a fixed income, recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and just trying to make ends meet. All she wanted was a simple oil change.
Instead, she left Rick Case Honda with a brand-new vehicle she didn’t want, a monthly car note nearly $300 higher, and no trace of her original car ever again.

A Simple Visit Turns Complex

At the end of May, Ms. Hazel visited Rick Case Honda in Davie, Florida, for a routine oil change. While waiting, her former salesman approached her with an offer.

“I can help you out today,” he said.

“How can you help me out? I just need an oil change,” she replied.

That’s when the pressure began. He insisted she test drive a newer, “cooler” car. Ms. Hazel made her position clear:

“I told him I wasn’t interested. I love the car I have. I can’t afford a new one. My rent went up. I’m not working. I’m on a fixed income.”

Despite her clear refusal, he persisted. So much so that Ms. Hazel called her niece in the Bahamas to speak with the salesman and tell him to stop.

But he didn’t.

The Overnight Test Drive That Became a Financial Trap

Eventually, he convinced her:

“Just take it home tonight. You can bring it back in the morning.”

The next day, Ms. Hazel did just that—she returned to the dealership to give the car back and retrieve her own. But the salesman wasn’t there. The staff told her:

“You didn’t deal with us. You’ll have to come back when he’s here.”

She returned again and repeated her wishes: “I don’t want this car.”
His response? More pressure.

“Don’t worry about it,” he said.
She reminded him: “I’m a widow. I was just diagnosed with breast cancer. I can’t afford this.”
Yet, he still insisted she keep the car.

From $400 to Nearly $700: A Shocking Discovery

“My original car note was $400. This new one? Almost $700.”

Ms. Hazel unknowingly signed paperwork under stress. Her original vehicle was gone. Her license plate was already transferred. And she didn’t even realize the price jump until the first statement arrived.

A Pattern of Abuse?

At Overlooked Justice, we reviewed Rick Case Honda’s online presence. Beyond the polished 5-star reviews, we found a pattern of troubling 1-star complaints from other consumers, sharing eerily similar experiences:
📉 Recent 1-Star Google Reviews:

  1.  Steve Rago Review
  2.  Tykia Brice Review
  3.   Persona Non Grata Review

📄 Additional Complaints and Ratings:

  • Consumer Affairs
  • Yelp Reviews
  • BBB Complaints
  • Trustpilot Ratings

These are not isolated incidents. They show a systemic issue in how some vulnerable consumers—particularly the elderly—are treated.

Our Commitment to Ms. Hazel

What happened to Ms. Hazel is more than just a poor dealership experience. It is a textbook case of:

  • Bait-and-switch tactics
  • Predatory high-pressure sales
  • Targeting an elderly widow on a fixed income

And we believe it is morally unacceptable—and potentially fraudulent.

Moving Forward

We are working with Ms. Hazel to file complaints with state consumer agencies and the Florida Attorney General’s Office. She deserves more than sympathy—she deserves justice.

Overlooked Justice – Opinion & Overview

In today’s America, institutions that claim to serve the people too often operate above accountability. Laws are bent—or ignored—by those with power and money. When corporations like Rick Case Honda use unethical business practices for profit, consumer rights are often abused and overlooked.

Final Thoughts: Research First, Regret Never

  • Always research the business and read 1-star reviews first—these often provide the most honest insight on business practices.
  • Cross-reference complaints. Patterns emerge when multiple people share similar experiences.
  • Don’t be swayed by a company’s branding—look at their history, legal actions, and how they treat customers.
  • If you believe you’ve been mistreated or misled by a business like Rick Case Honda, contact your State Attorney General’s office. Demand accountability. Demand justice.
