The FBI is investigating reports that hackers are selling digital scans of more than 153 MILLION driver’s licenses belonging to people in the United States and Canada.
A dark-web identity theft service known as Nexus claimed to possess more than 153 million driver’s-license records, along with millions of additional identification documents.
Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs investigated the operation and discovered his own driver’s license being displayed as a sample.
The FBI has confirmed that it is investigating.
The ultimate source and full scope of the data have not yet been officially established, and the 153 million figure remains the marketplace’s claimed number rather than a confirmed number of unique victims.
But the story raises an alarming question for every American:
WHO IS PROTECTING US?
It seems we are all victims now, and there appears to be little protection for the citizens who pay the salaries of those entrusted to lead and protect us.
Phishing and scams seem to be everywhere in the United States.
Every day Americans receive fraudulent emails, text messages, phone calls and increasingly sophisticated scams designed to steal identities, money and personal information.
We are constantly told to protect our Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, passwords, banking information and identities.
But what happens when WE protect our information and the organizations and government agencies entrusted with that information fail to protect it?
WHAT DOGE DID WITH AMERICANS’ SOCIAL SECURITY DATA WILL SHOCK YOU
The federal government created the Department of Government Efficiency — DOGE, whose personnel received access to government systems containing extraordinarily sensitive information about American citizens.
Then came revelations involving the Social Security Administration.
According to the government’s corrected court record, DOGE affiliates at the Social Security Administration shared SSA data through Cloudflare, a third-party service that was not approved for Social Security data.
The activity occurred from March 7 through March 17, 2025.
The government also disclosed that on March 3, 2025, an SSA DOGE affiliate sent an encrypted and password-protected file to DOGE affiliates outside the Social Security Administration.
Investigators believed that file contained personal information derived from approximately 1,000 people’s Social Security Administration records.
Perhaps most concerning, the Social Security Administration later acknowledged that it could not determine exactly what SSA information had been shared through Cloudflare or whether that information continued to exist there.
There were also broader allegations.
Former Social Security Administration Chief Data Officer Charles Borges alleged that DOGE affiliates created a copy of the NUMIDENT database, an extraordinarily sensitive Social Security database containing information associated with hundreds of millions of records.
Those broader allegations should be distinguished from what the government has confirmed.
But what has been acknowledged in the government’s corrected record is disturbing enough: sensitive SSA information was shared through an unapproved third-party service, personal information derived from approximately 1,000 SSA records was believed to have been transmitted outside SSA, and the agency could not determine exactly what information had been shared through Cloudflare or whether it remained there.

Americans are told every day to protect their Social Security numbers from criminals.
Shouldn’t citizens be able to expect the government entrusted with that same information to exercise at least the same level of caution?
THIS IS BIGGER THAN ONE INCIDENT
The driver’s-license investigation and DOGE controversy are not occurring in isolation.
Several enormous data incidents have already demonstrated how vulnerable citizens’ personal information has become.
CHANGE HEALTHCARE — APPROXIMATELY 192.7 MILLION PEOPLE
The massive Change Healthcare cyberattack affected approximately 192.7 million people.
The compromised information potentially included health insurance information, medical information, billing information and personally identifiable information.
It became the largest healthcare data breach reported to federal regulators.
NATIONAL PUBLIC DATA — BILLIONS OF RECORDS
Then came National Public Data, a background-check and data-broker company holding enormous amounts of personal information.
Hackers were alleged to have obtained approximately 2.9 billion records, potentially involving information connected to people in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The data reportedly included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and telephone numbers.
Perhaps one of the most disturbing aspects is that many people may never have even realized a data broker possessed their information.
AT&T — MORE THAN 70 MILLION CURRENT AND FORMER CUSTOMERS
AT&T acknowledged that personal information associated with more than 70 million current and former customers had appeared on the dark web.
Once again, citizens were left wondering who possessed their information, where it might travel next and how it could eventually be used against them.
NOW — 153 MILLION DRIVER’S LICENSE SCANS?
Think about what your driver’s license contains:
Your photograph, legal name, home address, date of birth, driver’s-license number, physical description and signature.
Now imagine criminals combining that information with Social Security information, telephone numbers, addresses, healthcare records and information obtained through previous breaches.
This isn’t simply data.
THIS IS OUR IDENTITY.
That is why the FBI investigation should matter to every American — even before investigators determine the ultimate source and full scope of the reported records.
GOVERN YOUR OWN LIVES
How many more Americans must receive another notification saying:
“Your information may have been compromised.”
How many families must lose money to increasingly sophisticated scams?
How many senior citizens must become targets of criminals armed with personal information that makes their deception appear legitimate?
And how many times can corporations and government institutions lose control of citizens’ information before meaningful accountability follows?
Technology has given humanity extraordinary capabilities, but those same tools have created opportunities for criminals that previous generations could scarcely have imagined.
Our identities can be stolen from thousands of miles away. Voices can be cloned. Photographs can be manipulated. Financial accounts can be attacked. Government identification documents can allegedly be purchased through criminal marketplaces.
Citizens cannot simply assume someone else is protecting them.
Protect your identity and your family. Verify suspicious communications before responding. Monitor your financial and credit accounts. Teach the people you love how modern scams operate.
And demand accountability from every corporation and government institution entrusted with our personal information.

There is also a spiritual dimension to what we are witnessing in this increasingly technological world.
Revelation 13 describes power, authority, deception and economic control, including a system affecting people’s ability to buy and sell.
For people of faith, those words can carry particular significance as technology becomes increasingly capable of identifying us, tracking us, impersonating us and influencing virtually every aspect of everyday life.
This does not mean every technological development or data breach fulfills biblical prophecy.
It does mean we should pay attention.
Knowledge alone is not enough.
Wisdom matters. Discernment matters. Faith matters. Truth matters.
WATCH:
The world seems to have fallen into perpetual darkness and lawlessness.
But darkness should never cause us to stop seeking the light.
